It provides a <strong>chain of custody that can be used<\/strong> by legal teams, auditors, or regulatory authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standards and guidelines: the reference framework for archival metadata<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several standards govern metadata management in electronic archiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ISO 14641:2018: metadata for readability, integrity, and traceability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>ISO 14641:2018<\/strong> standard addresses the design and operation of an information system intended for the preservation of electronic records. AFNOR states that it provides technical and organisational specifications for the recording, archiving, retrieval, and disclosure of digital documents, in order to ensure their preservation and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to metadata, the approach is more evidence-based than purely documentary. The NF Z42-013 standard requires that the lifecycle of the archive be documented: accession, preservation, consultation, disclosure, return, and disposal. FranceArchives notes that the updated version of the standard was published in October 2020.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NF 461: SAE Certification and metadata validation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NF 461 certification<\/strong> attests that an electronic records management system implements verifiable processes for preserving documents and their associated metadata. In particular, it covers the electronic archiving system\u2019s ability to ensure the traceability of operations, the secure preservation of archives, their retrieval, and control over disposal processes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OAIS model, standardised by ISO 14721<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>OAIS model<\/strong> formalises the idea that a digital archive is more than just the preserved file. It includes the content and the information necessary for its understanding, preservation, and verification over time. In practice, this information consists of metadata relating to context, provenance, integrity, identification, and rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Securing your digital archives with a Trusted Service Provider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For documents with significant legal implications, archiving must meet standards that go beyond simply ensuring future access to the file. It must enable the production of evidence that is usable, understandable, and verifiable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>qualified trust service provider<\/strong> offers guarantees governed by <a href=\"https:\/\/evidency.io\/en\/eidas-v2-qualified-electronic-archiving\/\">eIDAS<\/a>. In France, ANSSI is the agency responsible for qualifying trust service providers and publishing the national trust list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, archival metadata is not merely technical information.
